Via Ferrata Classic

Per person (children minimum age 10 yrs - 15yrs must be accompanied by an adult, 16 and older are classed as an adult) Duration 3 hrs.   This event starts at 12 noon (arrival 30 minutes before) Wet weather clothing, footwear and gloves.   Following the original Miners route to the top of the Mountain, Via Ferrata Classic is not as challenging or demanding as the Via Ferrata Xtreme.   A perfect introduction to move out of the comfort zone into a more stimulating and memorable experience, Via Ferrata Classic has won critical acclaim.   The Classic route begins by descending and traversing an exposed gully called Bull Gill. The route then continues over a narrow steel bridge which crosses over the top of the gulley, this is where miners used to dispose of unusable rock from deep within the caverns of Honister. From the steel bridge crossing there is a steep climb up a crag face, the top of the climb will mark the half-way point of the classic route. You then continue up the old incline passing by mountainside huts and drum houses the miners used to use to lower clogs to the Lancaster Ariel. This part of the classic route is a steep scramble up to the summit of Black star and then Fleetwith.   Winner of “Best Tourism Experience in The Lake District “2011 by Cumbria Tourism Fully guided ascent! Via Ferrata Xtreme

£45.00 per person (children minimum age 10 years to 15 years must be accompanied by an adult, 16 and older are classed as an adult) Duration 3 hrs. This event starts at 9 am or 3 pm (April-Oct) Arrival 30 minutes before. Wet weather clothing, footwear and gloves. The Via Ferrata Xtreme (including the Burma Bridge and Cargo Net Climb) offers a real adrenalin rush! Climbing the rock face some 250 feet off the ground. The guided route usually takes 3 hours and starts at 9.00 am all year round and from April through to October we also run the activity at 3.00 pm, arrival 30 minutes' prior for safety briefing is required. Minimum age is 10 years (1.3m height) with no maximum. Children must be accompanied by an adult aged 16 or over. The event does require a minimum of 2 people to operate and each group may consist of up to 12 guests (larger groups may be catered for by calling us). Wet weather clothing and boots (strong shoes) are required and are not provided, gloves are advisable in wet/cold conditions. Pre-Book to avoid disappointment The Via Ferrata was introduced at Honister in 2012 to bring a much more challenging (and some say scary) Via Ferrata experience. It is suitable for most ages and abilities but you do need to be reasonably fit and healthy for the Xtreme. The start point of the extreme is slightly lower than the classic. The first section involves a 15m descent on a near vertical ladder followed by a short traverse on steel rebar and rock. The first section aims to ensure people are confident with using our Via Ferrata equipment and feel safe to move onto more technical and difficult climbing. Once our guides are confident of your abilities they will take you onto the top of bull gill which is a more exposed part of the mountain. From the top of the gulley you will descend down a slightly over hanged section of rebar and then continue around the crag face until you reach the start of our Burma bridge, at roughly 80m long and high enough to make cars below look like ants, our Burma bridge can be just a little hair raising. If you manage to cross the bridge our guides will then take you up the next section of the Via Ferrata. With the hardest parts behind you, your confidence will be boosted and you will become at ease ascending up the side of Fleetwith pike. Using rebar, rock and a series of ladders you will make your way up to the beginning of our cargo net. Clamber up the net to reach the end of the climbing section of the Via Ferrata extreme. Now it’s a 10-minute scramble up to the summit of Black Star on Fleetwith Pike and one of the finest views the Lake District has to offer. Buttermere, Crummock and Loweswater, perfectly framed by Alfred Wainwright`s favourite Fells, roll out before your very eyes. (Weather dependent)  Please note:  Arrival time 30 minutes before departure, failure to do say may result in your places being reallocated.
